Bandstand 3

A nice day weather wise today and a beautiful balmy evening. (Unusual for an August Bank Holiday). I think this painting makes it seem much bleaker than it actually was.

30th August - Another seascape

The water is much choppier today but some nice waves nevertheless, particularly offshore at the Wish Tower beaches.

29th August - seascape

The sea was beautiful this evening with some impressive swells. The surfers were just coming out and I sensed a real air of anticipation. (what with the Bank Holiday weekend coming up).

Flower bed 2, Batemans, Burwash

We visited Batemans in Burwash a couple of weeks ago (the home of Rudyard Kipling) and I made a few studies of the flower beds there. This is a new subject for me but I really enjoy it.

Blue boat - Rye

This is a boat moored near the town centre in Rye. Pretty beaten up but obviously still in use.

Wednesday 26 August 2009

River Brede - Rye

This is a view of the River running between Winchelsea and Rye. Martin, Charlie, Tony and I walked along here a week or so ago.
As you may know - I love Rye. This is an area just outside of town that I dont know that well. This is only only a few miles from Winchelsea Beach, where, in the early sixties my Dad and I would search for 'Beach Diamonds' - pieces of glass smoothed by the sea.

Near Ditchling Beacon

For those that have been viewing my blog for a while, you'll note that this is the first time I've painted 'My Favourite Road' for a while. It's the stretch of Ditchling Road from Old Boat Corner to Ditchling Beacon.

Red Boat - Rye

I seem to have been creating a lot of paintings in and around Rye over the past week or so. I've probably mentioned it before but I really love the town and could easily live there. I think it would be great all year round. This is a solitary boat on the river near the net drying huts.

23rd August, Blue barn near Rye

This is looking east from a spot on the Rother about a mile north east of Rye. The grass in the foreground reminded me of the American painter Andrew Wyeth.

22nd August - Glynde

This is the entrance to the chapel at Glynde. I've always really liked small eclesiastical buildings like this.

Friday 21 August 2009

Rye houses

I've often wondered about this pair of houses as you approach Rye from the west. They're like big beach huts. Is the cladding and detailing around the roof original, or has it been added in recent years?

Thursday 20 August 2009

Rye flowers

This was in a little passageway near a pub by the Ypres Castle in Rye. I think the black door is probably a beer store room.

Wednesday 19 August 2009

Glynde Place

I've always liked this building which I think is the chapel for Glynde Place. The village of Glynde has a unique quality and is pretty much the same I would imagine as it was a century ago.

Derelict boat near Rye

Last Friday I spent the day with some friends walking near Rye. I saw this boat on the Royal Military Canal that runs from Cliff End in East Sussex to Seabrook in Kent. We walked from Winchelsea via Rye to Iden (but got a cab back!)

De La Warr Pavilion, interior

De La Warr Pavilion on Bexhill seafront is a 'must see' building. The highlight for me is this spiral staircase at the end of the main entrance.

16th August, Seascape - Bexhill

I haven't produced one of these seascapes as part of the 365 project so this is the first. The sea was really green/grey today. Still quite warm.

15th August - Normans Bay

This is a view from the railway crossing at Normans Bay. I THINK they have llamas on this farm!

Telephone Box - near Hooe?

When I saw this I realised how few original red phone boxes are left in use. There's an old box like this at Cuckmere Haven but It's painted green. I rather like the red ones wherever they are. Does anyone know where this box actually IS? It's opposite a general store, I think it's near Hooe, northwest of Bexhill. SOLD

Batemans, Burwash

We visited Batemans (National Trust property that was home to author Rudyard Kipling) on Monday this week. It's a beautiful house with many fascinating artefacts. I particularly liked the illustrations for the 'Just So' stories in a tiny room of their own.

Wednesday 12 August 2009

De La Warr Pavilion, main entrance

I've often walked through this entrance and really liked the framing of the doors and windows with the unique spiral staircase at the back (or front, depending on how you look at it).

Tuesday 11 August 2009

Flower bed, Batemans, Burwash

This isn't a subject I tackle often but I feel this project should reflect as many aspects of Sussex as possible and flowers feature a plenty. I also really enjoyed creating 2 similar paintings last month on 15th and 16th July - Lillies and Poppies.

Bexhill Beach - Mon 10th Aug

Quite blustry today. A little overcast but still quite warm. We visited Batemans earlier today (Rudyard Kiplings home) and came back via Bexhill. I'll be showing some paintings over the next few days from Batemans itself and the gardens. SOLD

Monday 10 August 2009

9th August - near Hayward Heath

So far most of the paintings in this year long project have been in East Sussex. This is a downland scene painted near to Haywards Heath in West Sussex.

8th August - near Lewes

Not quite as bright early on this morning. Here's another downs view looking South near Lewes.

Friday 7 August 2009

Blue Church Hall - Newick

Right on the main road between Uckfield and Haywards Heath, I spied this pretty little building as I drove through the village. A bit like the 'gates' I think there will be a few paintings like this over the next 12 months.

Thursday 6 August 2009

Low red barn

This is a farm building that I rather like somewhere near Maresfield.

Wednesday 5 August 2009

Downland near Lewes 3

A more traditional landscape looking south towards the downs from the new bridge system just east of Lewes.

Tuesday 4 August 2009

Downland near Lewes 2

Another view looking south from the train to Brighton having just left Lewes.

Monday 3 August 2009

Tea Rooms

This is the Duddleswell Tea Rooms where they have been serving teas since 1935. There is a milestone opposite announcing 'London 39 miles' and I presume this was once on the main route from the coast (Eastbourne) to London.

August 2nd 2009

Over this series of 365 paintings of Sussex I fancy a number will feature gates! This could be almost anywhere. In fact it's along a tiny lane near Waldron.

August 1st 2009

I've only recently started to paint trees and usually they are a small part of the painting. This is the first where the whole painting is trees. Its on the edge of the Ashdown Forest near East Grinstead.
