Seascape 15 - Bognor

Looking out to see from the beach at Bognor. Quite choppy today with some nice even breakers.

This is the little church at Ninfield just north of Bexhill.

Night painting of a field near Seaford. I understand this is the site of a medieval battle and visited here as a child.

Dusk at Cuckmere Haven. Walking from the car park in Seaford and looking north east. I'd like to think this has a touch of the Samuel Palmer about it?

Hastings nocturne

Looking East from Eastbourne beach towards Hastings and St Leonards just after sunset. This is a similar view to that seen from my studio.

Hove Square 3

Quite dramatic these squares in Hove. Particularly on windy grey days like today.

Firle Beacon 2

This is a view climbing up to Firle Beacon. It never ceases to amaze me how varied this landscape is particularly when factoring in the weather and changing light.

This is only the second time I've been up here, and its got to be one of the highest spots in Sussex. Pretty bleak again today. This is looking south towards the farm with the sea beyond.

Winter seascape

I haven't done one of these for a while. Rough today with big swells. This is looking out from the promenade on Hove seafront.

Rainy dual carriageway

Looking west near the turning off to Hove on the A27. Rainy and grey but with a hint of sun peeking through on the horizon.

Beach Huts - Shoreham Beach

I suppose huts like this are redundant for at least half the year. On this stretch of maybe 100 huts - not one is the same. Testament to aging, the weather and the owners care (or lack of)

Field near Bramber

This is just up the road from the farmyard mentioned in the previous post. Why does this painting remind me of 'Under Milk Wood'?

Bird Coop near Bramber

I spied this bird coop in a field right next to an old farmhouse near Bramber, West Sussex. The building looked very old, Tudor possibly, and at one point my 360 degree vista was the same as it was over the past few centuries. Until a tractor approached from a nearby road. I think, if you look you can still find places very near that are as they have been for hundreds of years.

Downland snowscene 2

The snow tends to make the downland even more 'graphic' with the lack of colour creating greater contrast. This is near Steyning in West Sussex.

Even more snow!

Another day of wind and snow today. Very nice too, though it means I can't get the car over the slope at the end of the road.

Downland near Ripe

A dramatic section of the downs near Ripe. One day I'll record a stretch of say, 5 miles of downland like this and piece them together.

Hastings Old Town 3

I love the High St in the Old part of Hastings. Some of the buildings date back to the 15th Century. Everwhere you look there are little twittens and tiny roads that don't seem to lead anywhere. I could live here.

Seven Sisters

This is another view walking down the path that leads from the car park at the top of the hill. I'm sure this view has been photographed MILLIONS of times. Definitely a very special place though. SOLD

Rye

This is another view of a field just before Winchelsea (opposite a farm) travelling from Hastings.

Hastings Pier

I seem to be spending quite a bit of time in the Hastings area at the moment and am drawn to paint here. I'm sure its because it reminds me of my days here as a boy.

Thursday 4th Feb - Rye

I've seen many renderings of the Rye skyline over the years. It's very identifiable from the Church tower just right of centre.
I would imagine the views from the top are wonderful.

Fishing Boat, Hastings

There always seems to be something happening on this beach in Hastings Old Town. When I was about 10 I fished every weekend in the sea for a year. In all that time I caught ONE fish. A ling. From the jetty just near here.

Downland near Winchelsea

This is just before Winchelsea (driving from Hastings) looking south. When painting by the side of the road you become very aware of the speed of the passing traffic and the contrast with the still of the countryside.

Marine Court, St Leonards on Sea

It's funny to think that my mother and father may have watched this building being built as children in the mid thirties. I remember it from when I used to visit my grandmother in Warrior Square in the early sixties and I still love it as much as I did then.
