I currently have a number of paintings on show at the Pelham House Hotel in Lewes. Call in to have a look if you're over that way. it's a beautiful hotel.
Beautiful sea today. Quite calm but with dramatic breakers. I find that whenever I paint the sea I feel a strong desire to see the film 'Riding Giants', generally thought to be the best surf movie EVER. If you haven't seen it, Video Shack in Eastbourne Old Town have it to rent.
After a lovely sunny autumn day I was not looking forward to the earlier evening (due to the time readjustment). However the sunset was beautiful and seemed a fitting end to the day. This is looking west towards the pier from the promenade.
I've been visiting the beach by the stade in Hastings since the late fifties and it is essentially exactly as it was then. I once fished every weekend for a year and the only fish I caught was a ling from the harbour arm just near here.
This is at the top of the town near the castle. A pair of windblown trees on the edge of a bowling green. This whole area is like a living museum and the buildings are just wonderful.
Another view of the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes. I've been in Lewes quite a bit lately and have an exhibition at The Pelham House Hotel that runs 'til early December. If you haven't been before pop in - it's a beautiful building with some nice exhibition areas and a fantastic sculpture garden.
I took some photos from the roof of this church a few years ago and was extremely impressed with the spiral staircase leading to the roof. It was built probably 700 years ago and the vertical line at the centre of the spiral was perfectly straight.
I've always liked this building which overlooks the pier on Eastbourne seafront. There's something of the 'Miami' about it. I remember taking a photo on Lincoln Avenue in Miami Beach - Christmas 1996, that had EXACTLY the same lighting, colour and contrast as this.
The evenings are drawing in and, as happens at this time of year, the short space of time before sundown can throw up some extraordinary colours. This is a view just south of Lewes.
Another abstracted study for a possible larger painting sometime in the future. These are the kind of interpretations I feel really at ease with at the moment.
A study of Brighton Pier with a warm early evening glow. There is an extraordinary light seen in Brighton at dusk on sunny days, captured very well I think by the painter Philip Dunn.
I love viewing piers from underneath. I've painted quite a few piers over the past couple of years. Well actually I've painted one pier lots of times (Eastbourne) This is the first study I've made of Brighton Pier since 1972 (when it was the Palace Pier) SOLD
I painted this last night looking towards the downland near Alciston. I have a habit of putting too much detail in some of these recent studies. Occasionally I feel the simpler ones are the most successful.
As I've said previously, I've got mixed feelings over this marina. A bit of a missed opportunity I think. I have some friends with a townhouse overlooking this view and the living area looks out (through french doors) and balcony to this bustling harbour scene.
This is a view looking north just past Arundel on the A27. Often the more abstracted images like this commnunicate more in terms of mood and atmosphere than the more representational.
On July 1st 2009, Sussex artist Julian Sutherland-Beatson began a year long project creating 365 original paintings of the Sussex landscape and seashore. He has been creating a 'daily painting' since April 2008 (see link below) and the project has attracted interest from all media: web, print, radio and TV. Sussex 365 is a continuation of that project.
NEWS - The final collection was shown at Glyndebourne Opera House (near Lewes) in October. Thanks to all of you who were able to come along to visit.
