Every time I pass Cuckmere Haven I want to paint the incredible 'meander' snaking towards the sea. I understand the area will be allowed to flood in future. Progress I suppose, and I'm sure the area will be as beautiful in another way.
Most of the paintings in this series so far have been in East Sussex. This is one of the first in West Sussex. I don't know Arundel that well but I do like this view of the town and castle (on the right) with boats on the rivers edge. SOLD
The seasons are changing and the gradual shifts in temperature are affecting the countryside. This is a view looking south from the train line out of Lewes heading towards Brighton.
Since first drawing and painting this pier in the early seventies, it's been the angles that have attracted me. Its also a place to see the incredible phenomenon of the starlings (?) flying in formation.
There's just too much to talk about this building. Purchased by a developer 2 years ago it's now falling into disrepair. It's a wonderful building and has such potential for a variety of uses (particularly artistic).
I suppose this could be almost anywhere in Sussex and it reminds me of the avenue of trees as you approach Jevington village from the south. It's actually near Battle on the road south towards Ninfield.
The view from my studio window is spectacular. On clear days you can see over to Hastings and on firework nights it's a great place to view a large part of Eastbourne. This is just before dawn with a lot of the streetlights still on.
I saw this view just a short distance from my home in Eastbourne. It's next to the local parish church and it looked remarkably European. A bit like the and of a fete or some similar celebration.
I visited Goodwood Revival today and for those that have never been, it's BRILLIANT! Generally thought to be the best classic car event in the world, there is much else to interest. Many of the visitors (I would say over 80%) of the visitors attend in authentic period costume and there is a real feeling of celebration in the air. I used to paint a lot of automotive subjects (cars!) and actually exhibited at Goodwood. It's also very well organised with outstanding attention to detail.
SOLD It's incredible how quickly the landscape changes according to the weather and the seasons. I painted this area a few months ago and the mood was really different. Can't wait for a covering of snow!
A favourite view of downland near Lewes, Dusk, just before darkness fell with the remains of the day visible on the skyline and reflecting in several points. SOLD
Quite blustry today, though you wouldn't know it from this study. I'm going to start a large (2 metre square seascape soon - watch out for details on this site. SOLD
I love the winding road that leads to and from Beachy Head from Birling Gap. This is approaching the top of the hill driving east. The cliff and sea would be in the distance.
RESERVED I painted this field near Falmer a couple of months ago and the change in season brings a subtle change in the landscape. Quite bleak up here today but I find the chill in the air most welcome at the moment.
This will be a familiar scene to those who live in East Dean and Friston. I would imagine this will be one of the last days that cricket will be played this year. I like the mass of trees behind the pavilion offering shade and shelter from the wind.
I've got mixed feelings about the Marina. I think it's such a missed opportunity to create a really nice community. Some of the architecture isn't brilliant and the planning is questionable but there are some beautiful sea views to be had and this block I really like.
I first painted this house earlier this year (17th Jan) and shortly afterwards received a photo from a friend in Austria of a photo he'd taken from EXACTLY the same spot several years previously. I would imagine this view is pretty much unchanged for a century or more.
This is such a lovely construction and a real 'jewel' on the promenade. Whenever asked 'What is my favourite colour?' I always answer - turquoise. In fact the glazed roof of this bandstand is a dark shade of my favourite colour.
There has been a lot of column inches written about the new Towner building here in Eastbourne. It fits nicely on the end of the existing Congress Theatre which I've secretly always really liked. (detail shown here) Incidentally, we saw 'Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance' at the nearby Devonshire Park Theatre on Saturday. It was BRILLIANT.
The last time I painted the roof of Brighton Station was for the series I made for The House Of Lords in 2004. It's such a dramatic building and I love the way it brings light in, whatever the external weather conditions.
This is looking out of the train window after just leaving Lewes station headed towards Brighton. Changeable today with occasional rain. I turned the central heating on today!
September 2nd and it's nearly Autumn! Its amazing how quickly the weather ALWAYS changes just after the August Bank Holiday. The sea looks much colder today, it's breezy and the air temperature is certainly cooler. This is midway between Pevensey Bay and Normans Bay.
Here's a view from the Cuckmere Valley (driving from Wilmington) looking west towards the chalk horse at High & Over. I often think what a (pleasant) shock it must be for a child to see these hill graphics for the first time.
On July 1st 2009, Sussex artist Julian Sutherland-Beatson began a year long project creating 365 original paintings of the Sussex landscape and seashore. He has been creating a 'daily painting' since April 2008 (see link below) and the project has attracted interest from all media: web, print, radio and TV. Sussex 365 is a continuation of that project.
NEWS - The final collection was shown at Glyndebourne Opera House (near Lewes) in October. Thanks to all of you who were able to come along to visit.
